Deb believes in a school where all students are able to seek the help they need and deserve. But in schools, often teachers work reactively to deal with student wellbeing issues as they become aware of them. As a result, too many students ‘slip through the cracks’ and aren’t identified, or helped, until their wellbeing is almost irrecoverable. Students aren’t seeking help or advice for problems in their lives.
Deb’s vision is for a website, That Feeling When, which gives students the ability to make appointments with school wellbeing services (without the embarrassment of being seen doing so), and that gives them access to outside services and wellbeing strategies.
Whilst she’s still in the initial development stages for the website, Deb has worked hard to build a solid conceptual foundation. First, Deb collaborated with school wellbeing staff to identify the services beyond the school gates students need access to. With this list compiled, Deb took the idea for ‘That Feeling When’ to students via a survey to seek their feedback and for additional ideas for the website (other services they’d want to access, the design of the site, etc). Deb and her team contacted a range of external services to gauge interest in other organisations who might be interested in the project.
Alongside her school’s wellbeing team, Deb has written templates for emails that students can send to the wellbeing team to request appointments and to communicate their feelings, so that the challenge of working out what to write in a message to counsellors isn’t a barrier to seeking help.
Deb and her team have designed the website. They’re now working on the build so that it can be published and used by teenagers in Deb’s school and region.
Deb and her team are in the process of developing That Feeling When, to support the 88% of teenagers aged between 13 and 17 who have access to a smartphone. If you have any ideas or know someone who might be able to help, please get in touch!
