Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

The Problem

Mikki believes in a school where students make informed decisions about nutrition, because when young people fuel their bodies with the right foods they can function better at school. However, at the start of the Changemaker Program, the reality at Mikki’s school was that some children weren’t bringing any food some days, the majority of kids didn’t have any control over the foods they were being given, and Mikki’s school weren’t making the most of their garden.

Michelina’s Solution

Mikki decided to take an active approach to educating students about food and influencing some of the decisions they were making. She ran a number of initiatives at her school!

Mikki introduced ‘Healthy Eating Brain Breaks’ throughout the school day and brought in different fruits and vegetables for students to try. Michelina surveyed her students to gauge an understanding of their food knowledge, and then taught an ongoing unit on healthy eating alongside the Health and PE teacher. She introduced her students to a ‘traffic lights’ concept and as a class they did an experiment on salt in food. Every day for a few weeks, Michelina checked her students’ lunchboxes, and they had a Nude Food day during which she taught them about food waste and sustainable practices.

Michelina’s Impact

Mikki has worked with her class of 27 students this year, and with the teachers of the Year 6 and 7 classes.

“In preparation for the End of Term 3 class party I gave out a note for families asking them to support our Term 2 and 3 learning about healthy eating and nutrition with their choice of food for a share plate. On the last day of Term 3, all students brought in a healthy snack rather than crisps, cookies and sweets. All of the kids enjoyed the food and went back for seconds (and some for thirds!). Their lunch boxes look better every day and they’re able to tell me about “all the time” and “some of the time” foods confidently.”

Like the idea?

Michelina would love your support for Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, or for you to start a similar program in your school, and she’d love to hear about any ideas you have or lend a hand where she can.
