At the beginning of the first Changemaker workshop, Aaron and Tim identified the fact that it felt like some staff at their school were just ‘going through the motions’ as a challenge worth tackling. At their school, it felt like some staff were segregated. Having two separate staff rooms didn’t help! Believing in a school where staff feel valued and are acknowledged for the great work they do, Tim and Aaron decided to focus their Changemaker Journey efforts on staff wellbeing.
Aaron & Tim’s Solution
The motto at Aaron and Tim’s school is ‘Strength and Stability’. Students receive ‘Strength Awards’ for doing well, and Aaron and Tim decided to create ‘Stability Awards’ for staff members to be acknowledged, too. These acknowledgements were to come from students and staff alike.
They took their proposal to their senior staff for approval and once they had the green light, Aaron and Tim met with the school bursar to organise a mini-budget for some Stability Award prizes.
Aaron and Tim presented the ‘Stability Awards’ concept to all staff at a staff meeting and the process began. Students in Homeroom and Health classes began with their award nominations, and now the principal asks the school leadership team to write awards out at the start of every meeting. It’s becoming a part of the fabric of the school.
Prizes and awards are drawn out every Friday and the results are emailed to all staff.
Aaron & Tim’s Impact
So far, teacher aides, teachers and office staff have all been awarded ‘Stability Awards’. To date, 160 certificates have been awarded to staff with a minimum of 8 awards being given out every week by the school’s leadership team.
“As a leadership team, we are now each awarding a staff member a Stability Award at every leadership meeting. These awards go to people we think are doing a great job. Having buy-in from the leadership team is allowing the staff to feel valued.”
