Quinn thinks it is unacceptable that girls do not receive enough encouragement to pursue STEM careers. Unfortunately, at the start of the program there was a culture at Quinn’s school where STEM was seen as for boys, and girls lacked the confidence to participate. This resulted in more boys enrolling in STEM electives, and girls who were talented in STEM were not pursuing their dreams. Quinn believes in a school where girls do not fall through the cracks of social stereotypes and can achieve in STEM.
The key to Quinn’s initiative was promoting a culture where girls can achieve and break through social stereotypes. The project is ongoing, but already Quinn is seeing results!
Quinn hosted a morning tea exclusively for Year 8 girls where they were exposed to statistics such as “only 28% of the STEM workforce in Australia is formed by women.” They then explored their self identify through personality quizzes and considered a diverse range of job roles in STEM that corresponded to their personalities.
In the making is a Girls for STEM program that continues to engage girls at the school in STEM initiatives as well as a mentoring program between girls in different year levels.
So far Quinn’s initiatives have positively impacted 10 girls who attended the morning tea. New aspirations were birthed from this session including being a laser fusion scientist or a patent lawyer. A further 22 girls are already signed up for the Women in STEM program.
“Girls who have participated in the morning tea have been asking for more STEM opportunities at school. Even parents have been curious and have asked for their daughters to be part of the program (after one morning tea!) at parent teacher interviews.”
