Healthy Lunch Boxes

The Problem

Tamara thinks it is unacceptable that students have low agency combined with poor lunchbox nutrition. Unfortunately, at Tamara’s school at the start of the program students were not being given enough voice in their learning and teachers were not trusting students enough to allow authentic student agency. Plus, Tamara noticed a further problem that 30% of students’ school lunch boxes were filled with sugary and packaged foods. Tamara believes in a school where students have a voice to make positive changes in their community.

Tamara’s Solution

The key to Tamara’s initiative was developing student entrepreneurship while also raising funds and promoting healthy eating habits. The project is ongoing, but already Tamara has had a massive impact!

Tamara developed a student idea to run a healthy food canteen to raise funds and promote healthy eating habits in her school community. Students used their knowledge from kitchen garden classes to grow and harvest food. They then planned recipes, cooked food, promoted it, sold it and managed the profits.

Students also created and ran a website to promote the canteen and healthy eating habits through recipes, reviews and general healthy eating buzz.

Tamara’s Impact

So far Tamara’s initiates have positively impacted at least 260 students through canteen sales, promotion at assemblies and through the website. The website has been visited multiple times by over 600 users and over $1000 has been raised.

“Students at our school have been completely engaged with this process. They’ve purchased (healthy) food from their peers, loved it and come back for more. Parents and community member have looked at the website and are making the food at home. That’s what we wanted. We are raising knowledge of how to eat healthy and put it in the lunchbox. Students running the canteen have been empowered with skills to become entrepreneurs, raise funds, and spend it well.”
