Susan thinks it is unacceptable that her students are disengaged and as a result a high percentage are acting out. Unfortunately, when Sue began the program students were disengaged from learning, numbers in the school were declining and results were low. She thinks that attitudes toward learning, attitudes towards authority and dealing with trauma are the key to success, and she believes in a school where students are proud of what they achieve.
The key to Susan’s initiative was to develop a greater model that engages students in learning. She started by presenting her concerns to a small group of staff. With this group she then promoted discussion with students regarding their concerns, how they feel and what they want from school. She researched possible programs she could implement in response to this and started promoting change within her classroom.
Susan’s initiative has already positively impacted all 18 students in her classroom, where there has been a real positive change in attitude. Regular open discussions, setting the scene, feedback and making time have all had a positive effect. She hopes that other teachers will come on board so that more students can be impacted.
“A 10 year old student who has encountered considerable trauma in his life, spent the majority of 2017 outside of a learning space being sent home in excess of 20 times has changed dramatically. In 2018 he was only sent home twice, he was in the learning space 95% of the time, he was engaged in learning, has had huge academic growth, and graduated from a nurture program.”
