Linda thinks it is unacceptable that there is a lack of support and guidance for students about their future pathways. Unfortunately, when Linda began the program 61% of students did not know what career they wanted to pursue, 52% of staff were unhappy with the current school culture, and 51% of students were similarly unhappy with the school culture. Linda thinks that perception of schooling and accessibility to individualised learning programs need to be improved and she believes in a school where all students are engaged and supported in their choice of learning pathways.
The key to Linda’s initiative was to seek and deliver career opportunities which meet student aspirations.
Linda started by planning change at the micro level. She surveyed students and parents about school delivery of education and career options. She then rewrote school subject selection books using senior school staff subject knowledge and delivery methods. She scheduled and marketed a local careers day and combined this with a delivery session on year 11 and 12 subjects. She then conducted follow up surveys to assess the impact of these changes.
Linda’s initiative has already positively impacted at least 1/3 of the combined year 10/11s, who reported the positive value of the career information session. 20% of students have also reported increased confidence in their subject choices.
“Many students have reported back to me personally about how the career’s day helped them choose senior school subjects. There has been an increase in students pursuing VET courses and SBAs and students are aiming to attain their SACE AND transition to the workplace.”
