A Fresh Start

The Problem

Samara thinks it is unacceptable that students/staff have a fear of the unknown, particularly the Year 7 merge into South Australian high schools. When Samara began the program she realised that by 2022 Year 7’s will have transitioned into South Australian high schools, causing displacement of Year 7s from country schools. Samara thinks that the unknown nature of this merge is problematic and she believes in a school that everyone wants to be part of.

Samara’s Solution

The key to Samara’s initiative was to create a smooth transition for the Year 7 merge into high school for both staff and students. The program is ongoing but Samara is already seeing a massive impact!

Samara started by working with the JP on a trial plan for the Year 7 transition. This included high school tours for Year 6s, allowing them to experience high school before transitioning there. School tours and talks were now aimed at both Year 6s and 7s, rather than just Year 7s and she worked collaboratively with primary schools, visiting students there and holding dance workshops, one subject that students could do in high school. Transition tours were also held by current students.

Samara’s Impact

Samara’s initiative has already positively impacted 160 Years 7s transitioning to high school.

“During our Year 6 tours staff were eager to jump on board and share their subjects and create engaging tasks. This can be rare as most of the time ‘some’ staff are reluctant to give up their NIT time. We received great feedback from the primary school staff and students. This will then help grow those relationships when we visit primary schools next year and students will feel less anxious about coming to high school.”
